Please also be aware that, while tax cuts may cause a short term increase in the number of jobs, they often lead to a recession with loss of jobs a few years down the line. They also often lead to inflation-adjusted wage erosion. Inflation is starting to creep up. We also don't know the impact of the tariffs which have been discussed in the last couple of months will be. Large tariffs, particularly when enacted with a cudgel vs. a scalpel, tend to lead to recession and job loss.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
Various prognosticators were estimating that around 200,000 new jobs were created in February. That would have been slightly above the 192,000 average new jobs created in each of the last three months. However, with new jobs at 313,000 in February, the average new jobs created in the last 3 months is 242,000, a significant increase.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Jobs Numbers were released today, Friday, February 2, 2018, for January 2018. This is the 12th month of jobs reports under Trump. We are still adding jobs, and we added 200,000 jobs in January.

(Jobs reports for January 2018 can be found HERE.)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As I said last month, it is a good thing for the people of the country that we are still adding jobs <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-align: justify;">considering the uncertainty and absurdity of many of the President's policies. Please also be aware that, while tax cuts may cause a short term increase in the number of jobs, they often lead to a recession with loss of jobs a few years down the line. They also often lead to inflation-adjusted wage erosion.

<span style="color: #073763; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">How are we doing compared to the last 5-6 years of the Obama Presidency?
Let's not just look at raw jobs numbers, but let's look at the percentage increase in jobs numbers over six month periods. That will even out the jobs numbers, which tend to vary quite a bit month to month. Each bar represents the % increase in jobs over a 6 month period ending in the designated month. Blue bars represent six month periods during the Obama Presidency; green bars represent six month periods overlapping Obama and Trump Presidencies; red bars represent six month periods during the Trump Presidency.

Here is what job growth has looked like over the past five years when calculated as a percentage increase over any running six month period:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You will have to click on the graph to really see it, but compare the red sticks on the right (job growth under Trump) with the green and blue sticks. Job growth has been slowing slightly since 2015. Job growth is slightly lower under the Trump administration than it was during the five month transition period (green sticks) or the Obama years (blue sticks) displayed on this graph.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
What does the future hold for job growth under Trump?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
We really don't know. We know that job growth is usually better under Democratic administrations, but there's nothing predictive there. Basically, though, Trump crows about job growth... but, compared to the last years of the Obama administration, it really isn't that great (so far) or that special.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Jobs Numbers were released for December 2017 on Friday, January 5, 2018. This is the 11th month of jobs reports under Trump. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It is a good thing for the people of the country that we are still adding jobs <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-align: justify;">considering the uncertainty and absurdity of many of the President's policies.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Let's not just look at raw jobs numbers, but let's look at the percentage increase in jobs numbers over six month periods. That will even out the jobs numbers, which tend to vary quite a bit month to month. Each bar represents the % increase in jobs over a 6 month period.

Here is what job growth has looked like over the past five years when calculated as a percentage increase over any running six month period:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You may have to click on the graph to really see it, but just compare the red sticks on the right (job growth under Trump) with the green and blue sticks. Job growth has been slowing slightly since 2015. Job growth is slightly lower under the Trump administration than it was during the five month transition period (green sticks) or the Obama years (blue sticks) displayed on this graph.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
What does the future hold for job growth under Trump?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
We really don't know. We know that job growth is usually better under Democratic administrations, but there's nothing predictive there. Basically, though, Trump crows about job growth... but it really isn't that great (so far) or that special.

Big jump expected!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
It seems as though September jobs numbers were released eons ago, and mediocre jobs numbers they were. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we actually LOST 33,000 jobs in September, the first time that has happened in the United States since 2010.

The Big But.. (please read below)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">BUT most economists thought that the big reason for the drop in jobs in September were the three massive hurricanes that caused so much trouble for Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico in the late August through September time frame. If so that would mean that jobs numbers should have bounced back in October... Well, tomorrow morning we will see!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The jobs pundits are forecasting anywhere from 300,000 to 325,000 new jobs in October... still an average for the two months of September/October of a mediocre 130,000 to 135,000. There is also a good chance that jobs numbers for September will be adjusted upwards. Many areas of Florida and Puerto Rico were not able to report jobs numbers at all in September, as jobs numbers are reported as of the week containing the 12th day of the month... Right smack dab during hurricane time.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
The ADP harbinger of jobs numbers:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
The payroll processor ADP released its monthly report of private job growth on Wednesday, October 31st, and they estimate an additional 235,000 private sector jobs were added in October.. not as many as have been estimated by other jobs forecasters but still good, steady job growth.

But ADP did estimate an increase of 22,000 manufacturing jobs, and an average addition of 12,000 manufacturing jobs per month over the last 6 months, a bit lower than the average addition of manufacturing jobs under Obama in the 2014-2015 timeframe, and a slight decrease from the 6 month average increase of mfg jobs earlier this year.

So we will be waiting at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time tomorrow to see what the jobs Gods at the BLS tell us!

Preview reading:

CNBC: Big rebound in October jobs expected after hurricanes hit September hiring

CNN: What to look for in Friday's jobs report

Wall Street Journal: Five Things to Watch in the October Jobs Report

Forex: NFP due Friday US time - previews

Forex: Barclay's Preview

Marketwatch: Get ready for a huge jump in October payrolls

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">33,000 jobs lost, probably due to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Unemployment drops to 4.2%.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is the first drop in total jobs since September 2010 with a huge drop in the number of people employed in the "Food Services and Drinking Places" sector. We won't know if this total drop was due to the hurricanes at least until the state employment reports for September are published later this month.

The September 2017 Jobs Report was released by the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning, Friday, October 6.

This was a very mediocre report, showing a loss of 33,000 jobs, the first loss in total jobs since September 2010.

However, the unemployment rate dropped down to 4.2%, the lowest unemployment rate since February 2001.

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hurricane influence?

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
These jobs numbers may also represent a turn-around from a strong Obama economy to a weaker Trump economy, but we won't know for awhile.

What happened after Katrina?

Jobs numbers did go down in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Initially, 35,000 jobs were reported as lost in September 2005. But as reports were amended and corrected, it was determined that 67,000 jobs were actually added in September 2005 and 84,000 jobs were added in October. Job losses were reported in more sectors in September 2005; in today's report, job losses are really concentrated in the "Food services and drinking places" sector, which lost 104,000 jobs. <span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

The economy has been adding jobs consistently for 7 1/2 years now, so this reversal is noteworthy. In 45 of the 83 months between early 2010 and the end of the Obama Presidency, 200,000 or more jobs were added.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is a huge increase, and almost all of those extra claims came from Texas. I would think there will be another jump from Harvey next week and we will also see claims from Florida and Puerto Rico jump due to Irma. We won't know how much these weather disasters will impact the economy at large and the labor market at large for several weeks.

Comparing the Impact of Harvey to the Impact of Hurricane Katrina?

Back in September 2005 initial claims jumped about 100,000 claims in the first three weeks after Katrina, but they came down after that. Continued claims jumped about 300,000 in the first three weeks after Katrina hit, but then started to decline.

Houston is a bigger area and Harvey was a larger hit than was Katrina in New Orleans. We can expect at least a 100,000 spike in initial claims over the next few weeks, and at least a 300,000 spike in continued claims over the next month.

(Continued weekly claims are reported a week behind initial claims, so this week's report did not show an increase in continued claims.)

How Many People Are Getting Laid Off In Recent Weeks?

The insured unemployment rate, meaning the number of people who are collecting on unemployment claims as a percentage of the number of people working in jobs in which employers are paying into the unemployment insurance fund, continues to decline and is the lowest EVER, a path on which it started back in 2016.

The number of people getting laid off and filing for unemployment benefits is still, apart from the recent increase due to Harvey claims, at record-breaking lows. We have not had sustained 4-week averages of new unemployment claims in the 230,000 to 240,000 range since mid 1973.

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The August 2017 Jobs Report was released by the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning, Friday, September 1. This was a surprisingly mediocre report, showing only 156,000 new jobs, and it did not meet the pundits' estimates of 180,000 to 200,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate inched up to 4.4%, in the same range that it has been in since April.

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
Hurricane Harvey influence?

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Some suggest that the jobs numbers may represent a turn-around from a strong Obama economy to a weaker Trump economy, but we won't know that for a few months.

Jobs numbers are compiled as of the week containing the 12th day of the month, so this report was not impacted by Hurricane Harvey, but the next 1-2 reports may well be. Jobs numbers did not go down after Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, but they did seem to stall.<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The economy has been adding jobs consistently for 7 1/2 years now. <span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Despite this month's slow down and minor increase in the unemployment rate, job reports under Trump (since February) seem to continue the trend of consistent addition of jobs and slow but generally consistent decline in the unemployment rate.

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Have a million jobs really been created during the presidency of Donald Trump?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well, yes; since Trump took office in January 2017, six full months ago, 1,074,000 jobs have been added (in net numbers) according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics which keeps track of such things.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The issue is whether or not this is as big a deal as Trump supporters claim and whether or not this is better than job growth during the Obama years.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">See for yourself:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The graph is a bit small; you can click on it to get a clearer look. The blue sticks are job growth during the second Obama term. Green sticks are job growth during the transition, with six month periods overlapping the Obama and Trump administrations. The red bar at the far right is job growth for the first full six-month period with Donald Trump as President.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Job growth under Trump hasn't slowed a lot compared to job growth under Obama; but it certainly hasn't accelerated. And, if we just look at six month periods ending in July, this last six month period ending in July 2017 is the most anemic such six month period since at least 2013.

Nothing Grand and Wonderful or Special

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, Trumpsters: There's nothing to write home about here. Yes, we did add a million jobs during Fearless Leader Trump's first six months in office, but there is nothing grand or wonderful about adding a million jobs in a six month period. In recent years, Obama generally did better.

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The July 2017 Jobs Report was released by the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning, Friday, August 4. This is another strong report, continuing last month's trend. This report, while strong, is not better than most of the job reports during the Obama years.

The economy has been adding jobs consistently for 7 1/2 years now. In fact, in 45 of the 84 months between early 2010 and the end of the Obama Presidency, 200,000 or more jobs were added.

The job reports under Trump (since February) seem to continue this trend of consistent addition of jobs and slow but consistent decline in the unemployment rate.

The payroll processor ADP released its monthly report of jobs in the private sector Wednesday, August 2, 2017. ADP believes that 178,000 new jobs were created in the private sector in July, the lowest number in three months. Over time, the ADP numbers and the official BLS numbers tend to be closely aligned, but in any one month ADP may predict a smaller or a larger number than BLS.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">ADP believes we have added 200,000 private sector jobs a month on average over the past 13 months, back to July 2016. So 178,000 is really not that much lower than this average.

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The June 2017 Jobs Report was released by the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning, July 7. This is a strong report, seeming to reverse the weakness seen in the prior few months. Again, one month does not make a trend, and this report, while strong, is not better than most of the job reports during the Obama years.

The economy has been adding jobs consistently for 7 years. In fact, in 45 of the 84 months between early 2010 and the end of the Obama Presidency, 200,000 or more jobs have been added.

The job reports under Trump (since February) seem to continue this trend of consistent addition of jobs and decline in the unemployment rate.

Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 194,000 per month. Over the past 12 months, job gains have averaged 186,500 per month.

The number of employed people INCREASED by 245,000. The number of unemployed people INCREASED by 116,000 as 361,000 people joined the labor force, meaning that they either started working or started looking for work.
The alternate unemployment rate (U-6) increased to 8.6% this month. A year ago the U-6 rate was 9.6%.

The Labor Force participation rate has been VERY stable since 2014, varying between 62.4% and 63%.
Remember that there is NO ideal labor force size, and most of the overall decrease in the labor force participation RATE over the last few years has been due to Baby Boomers retiring in great numbers.
