Have jobs or workers been lost in 2011?
  • In 2011, we have had net gains in seasonal numbers of jobs and in numbers of workers.
  • We have had losses in the number of non-seasonally adjusted jobs; in other words, we have fewer jobs right now than we had in December 2010 when Christmas hiring was very strong.  This is due to layoffs in government sectors.  Check back for more information about this.
  • But, in terms of private jobs, we have only job gains in 2011.
How many jobs were created over the past three months from April 2011 to July 2011?

  • In seasonally adjusted numbers, 216,000 jobs have been created in the last three months.  That's 72,000 a month.
  • In "raw" unadjusted numbers,  152,000 jobs have been lost in the last three months.   That's a loss of 51,000 a month.

How many jobs were created over the past year, from July 2010 to July 2011?
  • In seasonally adjusted numbers, 1,258,000 new jobs were created over the past year.  That's 105,000 a month.
  • In "raw" unadjusted numbers,  1,351,000 jobs have been created in the past year.  That's 113,000 a month.

How many jobs have been created since the "trough" of the recession in late 2009/early 2010 to now, July 2011?
