Monday Morning Updates

Waiting for Obama to speak.  Sunday, May 1, 2011, 10:30 p.m. CDT.

CNN is reporting that Bin Laden was killed in a mansion outside of Islamabad, Pakistan.

NBC says there are conflicting reports about where Bin Laden was killed.

CNN says it was a "human" raid and not a predator drone that was responsible for his death.

People outside the White House in a spontaneous demonstration:  Singing the national anthem and God Bless America, waving flags.  Shouting USA!

Military on high alert.

Updates as they develop.

Obama speaking:

"I can announce to the world that Osama Bin Laden is dead.
Images of 9/11 have been seared into the national consciousness.
Nearly 3000 citizens were taken from us.
On September 11, 2001.  We offered our neighbors a hand; we offered the wounded blood.  Love of community; country.  No matter what race and ethnicity we were; we were united as one American family.  United in our resolve to protect our nation and bring those to justice.
We quickly learned that these attacks were planned and executed by Al Queda under the direction of Osama Bin Laden.

Over the last ten years, military counter-intelligence specialists have disrupted terrorist attacks, removed the Taliban from Afghanistan.  Around the globe, (we have) killed or captured scores of Al Queadaterrorists.

But Bin Laden remained at large.

I told Leon Panetta to make the killing or capture of Bin Laden our top priority.

Last August 2010, I was informed of a possible lead.  Bin Laden had been located hiding in a compound deep in Pakistan.  Today, on my direction, we carried out a raid on that compound.

No Americans were harmed.  We avoided civilian targets.  We killed him; took custody of his body.

Death of Bin Laden "most significant achievement to date."

We must remain vigilant at home and abroad.  We are not at war with Islam.

We have said that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew that's where he was.

A good and historic day for both of our nations and it is essential that Pakistan join us in our achievement.

Ten years of service, struggle, and sacrifice.

Americans can do whatever we set our minds to".

Comments:

Significant accomplishment for Obama in this term.

Effects on American life in terms of security?

Certain elements of American special forces have been dedicated to this, focused on this for ten years.  Navy Seals?  Not known if Bin Laden tried to defend himself, but he was shot in the head and the US recovered his body.

Increasing cooperation from the Pakistanis.

Someone wrote:  Did Obama just win his re-election?

Wow...
